A new audit says a dire lack of prison guards is costing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars in overtime payments.

The Department of Corrections, which oversees the nation´s largest prison system, says it is recruiting as fast as it can.

The department says it may be short 2500 prison guards for at least the next two years, forcing even more overtime spending.
