Highway 120 Vistors Center Update
Sonora, CA — The Tuolumne County Visitor’s Bureau no longer operates a Visitor’s Center at the Highway 108/120 Yosemite Junction.
TCVB Executive Director Nanci Sikes was Thursday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.
Sikes stated that they were forced to leave the former site because the owner has decided to have it demolished. She says the Visitor’s Bureau has big plans though and in the long term hopes to eventually open a new Visitor’s Center directly across the street.
In the short term the Visitor’s Bureau is looking into a lease agreement on a portion of the Chinese Camp Fire Station.
At the quickest, the station will not be able to open as a Visitors Center for perhaps another two weeks, thus missing the fourth of July Holiday traffic.
Sikes anticipates partial occupation of the fire department building for perhaps the next two years.
While the Visitors Bureau does operate a year-round Visitor’s Center near downtown Sonora, Sikes says it is important to have the second location near the Yosemite Junction. “Many of our visitors are in route to Yosemite National Park, and it’s important that we capture them at the 108/120 entrance and make sure that they know that there are places to stay, dine and play in Groveland,” says Sikes.
The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
