Begin your Saturday with an authentic Mexican Breakfast at Tuolumne County’s own “El Dia de Los Muertos,” a FREE Family Festival. Please bring an item to remember a loved one for the day’s memorial Ofrenda altar. Nationally acclaimed bilingual storyteller, Olga Loya, will share bilingual stories about “El Dia de Los Muertos,” as well as tales of growing up in Los Angeles’ famous barrio Chavez Ravine as the child of Mexican immigrants. Joining her will be Nathan Ignacio with his One-Man Band performances and Lisette Sweetland, making her storyteller’s debut. The 3-hr event is hosted by “Pebbles in a Pond: The Rippling Effect of Democracy,” a community arts project, created and directed by local arts advocate BZ Smith. The grant-funded project focuses on celebrating our community’s diverse cultures while also using the arts of storytelling and music to encourage participation in voting and citizen engagement. Children can enjoy face-painting, arts and crafts. In addition volunteers from the Leagus of Women Voters will be on hand to assist Spanish-speaking citizens and others with Voter Registration. “Pebbles in a Pond: The Rippling Effect of Democracy” is created and directed by long-time storyteller BZ Smith. Funded by a “Heartland Creative Corps ” grant from the California Arts Council, working in cooperation with the State Legislature. Additional support comes from Tuolumne County Arts, United Way of Merced County, and local community sponsors.
