Columbia College Orchestra Hosts Classical Concert

The Columbia College Orchestra performs music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Sergei Prokofiev, Johann Strauss Jr., Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Dmitri Shostakovich at their Fall concerts.

The performances will be held in the Dogwood Forum on the Columbia College campus on Saturday, October 25 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, October 26 at 3 p.m. There is no charge for admission.

Dr. Daniel Godsil, professor of music at Columbia College, conducts the orchestra.

“I’m extremely excited by the growth of the Columbie College Orchestra. Not only have we grown in size, but also significantly in skill level – the music we will present at this concert is the same repertoire one would expect to hear played by larger metropolitan groups,” Godsil said.

David McCarroll and Sam Zabell will perform the Bach “Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor.”
The orchestra will be celebrating Johann Strauss Jr.’s 200th birthday by performing his “Tales from the Vienna Woods.”

Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” will be performed featuring the orchestra’s Concert Master Gary Osias.
Gary Osias has performed with the Chabot College Orchestra, Prometheus Symphony Orchestra, Temple Beth Sholom Shabbat Ensemble, Mariachi Alegre, the Alegre String Quartet, the Columbia College Community Chorus and the Mother Lode String Quartet.
The orchestra will also perform the “Festive Overture” by Shostakovich, the “Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture” by Tchaikovsky, and selections from Prokofiev’s orchestral suite from the ballet of “Romeo and Juliet.”

Godsil enjoys the blend of college aged students and retirees playing together in the orchestra.

“It’s a great musical tradition,” he said. “Everyone is learning and everyone is teaching.”
