Bonsai pots have traditionally come in specific shapes and forms with very little or no differences over the years. However, artist Deanne Ragsdale is now introducing new conceptual design ideas in her bonsai tree containers, which she will present to the Mother Lode Bonsai Club on Saturday, May 3. Her presentation will immediately follow the member meeting, which starts at 10 a.m. in the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road in San Andreas).
Deanne Ragsdale owns Gray Horse Studio in Jackson and has worked over the years as a scientific illustrator, custom jewelry designer for the industry, advertising graphic designer, and fine artist/illustrator. A native of Placer County, she attended Sierra Community College in Rocklin and UC Davis. In 1976, Ragsdale moved to Rhode Island where she designed jewelry for various companies that sold in major retail chains for 27 years.
In 2003, she wanted a change from “being so precise in jewelry making” and returned to California. “All my life, I’ve loved expressing myself through various forms of art,” she said. “And when I returned, I felt free to try anything I wanted, literally create my own stuff.” This included wall art, acrylic paintings, sculptures and currently, concrete castings.
“A few years ago at an Amador Flower Farm Show, I met David Anderson, who is an experienced bonsai teacher and senior mentor of the Mother Lode Bonsai Club. After seeing my work, he encouraged me to produce bonsai pots, which I did but with my own twist,” she added. Her unique handmade pots can best be described as individual and one-of-a-kind landscape works, reflecting the designer’s personality. All are made of papercrete and hypertufa material with integral iron oxide color and water-based stains and sealer. Her pots are prepared for bonsai wiring and ready for immediate use.
Some of Ragsdale’s bonsai pots will be available for purchase at a special club discount. A raffle will also be held for bonsai trees along with essential materials and supplies. Additionally, members may have some finished specimens for sale.
“Everyone is invited to attend regardless of their experience with bonsai,” said Bev Meyerhoff, club president. For more information, she can be contacted at (916) 934-6916 or bevmeyerhoff@gmail.com.
