Sacramento, CA — State Insurance Commission John Garamendi is undergoing heart surgery today to repair a valve after experience some discomfort while working at his Sierra foothills ranch Saturday.

Spokesman Byron Tucker says doctors found a problem with the commissioner´s mitral valve and scheduled surgery. Tucker says the surgeon expects the commissioner to have a swift and full recovery.

The 61-year-old Garamendi is running for the Democratic nomination to succeed Lieutenant Governoir Cruz Bustamante, who is barred by term limits from seeking a third term.
