Last year on Super Bowl Sunday, California saw its highest number of alcohol-related crashes… and DUI arrests… in the past five years. This year, officials hope things will be different as they kick off a media campaign and a heightened enforcement campaign. New public service TV spots have been produced for free, and will be airing on local stations around California. And, funded by a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety, CHP officers will be working extra hours and focusing on searching for impaired drivers.
The latest set of Super Bowl Sunday statistics does include a silver lining: while collisions and arrests were up last year, the number of fatal collisions on Super Bowl Sunday 2003 was at its lowest point in five years.
