Con artists who claim to work for the attorney general´s office or the California Department of Justice are calling Californians to steal their identities. Attorney General Bill Lockyer says those who receive the calls are told they have been victims of identity theft and that the attorney general´s staff can help. They are then asked to give or confirm information such as Social Security numbers and bank account numbers. Lockyer says that with this kind of information, thieves can commit credit card fraud, theft and other crimes.
