Control Burn Gets Out Of Hand

Sponsored by:

Fire officials say dipping temperatures, slowing winds and snow should help in the battle against a forest fire in the San Bernardino Mountains.

The U.S. Forest Service intentionally set the fire to destroy dry brush and dead trees, but it got out of control and burned through 200 acres.

San Bernardino County fire spokeswoman Angie Franco-Samayoa says the prescribed burn began Wednesday afternoon. She says the blaze had scorched 150 acres before the Forest Service began trying to put it out when winds picked up and humidity dropped earlier today.

Franco-Samayoa says, in all, the blaze scorched 350 acres. She says only ten acres were outside the 500-acre section that the Forest Service originally intended to burn. There were no injuries. A hut used by the Bear Mountain resort´s ski patrol was destroyed.
