What Is Omega Nu?

On Saturday October 25th, Omega Nu will host a Luncheon / Holiday Boutique for women. The bad news is that if you don’t have a ticket, the event is already sold out. So what makes Omega Nu events so popular?

Lauralee Brown, Sorority Sister with Omega Nu, was Friday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

Brown explained that Omega Nu is a sorority-type women’s association that dates to 1898 and now includes 12 chapters around the state of California, including one in Tuolumne County.

Overall, it is a women’s group that is dedicated to charitable work in the community.

The local chapter was launched in 1939 inside of the ‘Indian Room’ at the Sonora Inn.

The women that make up the local chapter are diverse, with many members who are business owners, educators and retirees from various professions. Despite their careers and other demands, they work year-round on their annual charitable work and fundraising events including the upcoming luncheon.

For the past couple of decades, Omega Nu was well known for their local “Upscale Rummage Sale”.

According to Brown, “Times change and we stopped the Rummage Sale. The response in the past few years was not as strong as it used to be. When it comes to fundraisers and events, we are always evolving with the times.”

Since the first meeting in 1939, Omega Nu has supported local, community non-profits that support women, children and families through dedicated time and donations.
