Mother Lode Will Celebrate King

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA – The annual Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration is coming up this weekend in the Sonora High School Auditorium.

Committee member Pat Cervelli says this year’s theme is, "Peace and Non-Violence."

"I think the message of "Peace and Non-Violence" is as relevant today, as when he spoke about it in 1967," notes Cervelli. "His speech was called ‘Beyond Vietnam, A Time To Break Silence,’ and although he was talking about Vietnam, it is relevant today."

The non-profit committee putting on the event also organizes an essay and art contest for Tuolumne County school students. The winning essay will be read at the celebration.

Last year’s event drew over 300 people. Sunday’s celebration will begin at 2pm at the Sonora High School Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. Performers this year will include the Sierra Waldorf Choir, Dennis Brown and Michelle Allison. There will also be a reading by Kathleen Malloy, and a story read by B.Z. Smith.
