SAF Accreditation Decision

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — With a settlement agreement nearing, a decision has not been made whether the Sonora Area Foundation will reapply for accreditation through the Community Foundations National Standards Board.

The CFNSB creates national standards for community foundations, and SAF did not reapply last winter.

“The Sonora Area Foundation withdrew its application for the accreditation process, at their request, due to ongoing litigation,” says Greg Applegate, SAF Executive Director. “It will be up to the Sonora Area Foundations Directors, at a later date, if they would like to reapply.”

SAF could not supply some of the information needed for reaccreditation because of ongoing litigation related to past Executive Director Mark Bergstrom. As reported earlier this week, the Foundation is close to a settlement with Bergstrom.

The national accreditation does not necessarily affect the operations of the Foundation, but shows that they meet vigorous standards for philanthropy. There are 29 accredited community foundations in California.
