Redistricting Would Shake Political Landscape

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA – The State of California Citizens Redistricting Commission has released the first draft of proposed changes to the state and federal legislative districts.

Both Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties would become part of a U.S Congressional District that spans the Sierra Nevada region from Placer County down to Fresno County, but not include communities like Oakdale, Modesto and Turlock in the Central Valley.

Currently, the northern part of the newly proposed district is represented by Republican Tom McClintock, the central area is represented by Republican Dan Lungren and the southern region is represented by Jeff Denham. None of those currently live in the district.

Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties would become part of the same Assembly District. The boundary line would span from Placer County down to Madera County. The new district would not include Modesto, where current Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen lives.

Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties would become part of the same California Senate District under the proposed changes. The District would span from Placer County down to a portion of Fresno County. District 14 Senator Tom Berryhill of Oakdale and District One Senator Ted Gaines of Roseville both live outside the boundaries.

The Commission states that the districts were drawn without regard to political incumbents and partisan considerations. The Districts are supposed to reflect geographic and common sense boundaries.

The final versions of the new maps will be approved in August.
