‘Shark Week’ Producers Visit Belleview Elementary For Special Presentation
Sonora, CA– Producers of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, Jeff and Donna Kurr, made a special visit to Belleview Elementary School recently, sharing their experiences in wildlife documentary filmmaking and research during the school’s monthly Eagle Rally.
Superintendent-Principal Carmel Portillo, dressed in a shark suit, kicked off the rally by announcing fun shark-themed games planned by the student council. Fourth-grade teacher Alia Katz, who coordinated the presentation, discovered Jeff’s connection to Sonora from a Good Day Sacramento broadcast and invited the couple to the school.
Jeff Kurr, who grew up in Sonora, shared his journey working on Shark Week for 35 years. “Most people, when they jump into the ocean, swim away. I actually swim toward the shark to film—that’s my job,” he told students. Jeff emphasized that Shark Week aims to change perceptions about sharks, explaining, “Sharks are not monsters… We want people to love sharks.” He expressed concerns about shark conservation, noting, “Millions of sharks are killed every year. Sometimes I worry that when you guys grow up, there won’t be any sharks left.”
Donna Kurr, who works as a scientist for biotech giant Amgen, revealed her passion for wildlife photography, which she began pursuing after meeting Jeff in 2014. She shared her inspiring journey as an immigrant from Iran, overcoming language and financial challenges to build a successful career. Donna encouraged students to follow their dreams despite obstacles, saying, “Try your best and give it your all. You are blessed to live in the greatest country in the world—land of opportunity!”
Donna also showcased her wildlife photography, featuring sharks breaching, as well as photos from safaris, including rhinoceros, elephants, and lions. After their presentation, the Kurrs signed autographs on pre-printed shark photos, hats, shoes, and plushies for the students.
