Sonora, CA—The DUI Prosecution Unit of the Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office released the latest statistics for the first half of its second grant year, 2025-2026.

This is the second California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) grant awarded to the specialized office, with just one prosecutor. As reported here, the first-year grant from October 2024-2025 was for $208,238, and the unit filed 385 cases and secured 325 convictions. With that success rate, the unit received a renewed funding of $245,335, an additional $37,000 for the second year. The D.A.’s office provided this breakdown of unit statistics from October 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026:

  • DUI Cases Reviewed: 243
  • DUI Cases Filed: 226
  • DUI Convictions: 130
  • Wet Reckless Convictions: 24 (plea bargain that reduces DUI to reckless driving)

In the first grant year, the DUI Prosecution Unit filed 153 cases, about a 98% filing rate, and secured 149 DUI convictions and 23 “wet reckless” convictions. While the number of convictions is down from the first year’s grant, the D.A.’s office noted that these statistics reflect an approximate 93% filing rate of those DUI cases that are referred to her office for prosecution. They further explained, “One note when looking at these statistics is that from the time of filing to the time of conviction, there are often multiple court appearances that occur between that time. Thus, the reported conviction statistics are not reflective only of the cases filed during that reported period. For example, cases filed during this reporting period are likely still open and pending court proceedings.”

Some of the work performed by the unit prosecutor included attending a Vehicular Homicide Symposium hosted by the California District Attorney Association, a DUI checkpoint at the Sonora Police Department, and assisting the Traffic Safety Resource Prosecution Network with a training in Stanislaus County attended by several local law enforcement officers. The prosecutor also went out to the site of a DUI collision that resulted in injuries at the request of the California Highway Patrol. The program is currently funded through September 2026.

The DUI Prosecution Unit reminds everyone that “drinking and driving endangers everyone on the roadways, and the safest option is always to designate a sober driver.”
