Events Throughout The Mother Lode

As Fall brings cooler temperatures, it is a full weekend of events for the Mother Lode.

Today, Friday the 27th, the merchants and businesses of Historic Downtown Sonora will host a free end-of-summer family event. TGIF Sonora Dancin’ In The Street will begin at 6pm all along Washington Street (Highway 49), with several bands playing in Courthouse Park, Coffill Park, Linoberg Street and between So. Stewart St. and So. Shepard St. Coffill Park will offer table and chair seating for roaming diners with food available from the downtown restaurants and cafes.

Bring a low-back camping or beach chair and a blanket to watch Jackson Street Family Movie Nite at dusk. The movie will be Disney’s ‘The Odd Life Of Timothy Green’ with Jennifer Garner.

Saturday the Sonora Farmers’ Mural Painting Days begins at 7:30am. Fifty or more artists are expected to paint the first outdoor public art project. The 10th Anniversary Celebration Open House at Sonora Fire Museum
will also be held on Saturday at the Sonora Fire Museum & Senior Lounge, Kids activities include mini bucket brigade and target knockdown, and they will be demonstrating how the 1876 hand pumper works. Details here.

The Tuolumne County Museum at 158 Bradford Street in Sonora will also host Museum Day activities on Saturday from 11am to 2pm. View their recent digital addition to the Native-American collection, new displays featuring Gold Country Black Heritage, Mexican Heritage, the Sierra Railway, and their ongoing Justice and the Law Exhibit. The museum was once a jail and features stories of Tuolumne County’s lawmen. Museum visitors will be invited to the booking desk, where free mug shots will be taken in vintage clothing. In Jamestown on Saturday features The Return of Pioneer Day. Family and children’s games begin at 10:00pm with prizes, the firing of the anvil at high noon, guns of the chosen few re-enactments 12:30pm, street dance and live music and a wagon train arrival mid afternoon. It is National Public Lands Day at New Melones Lake, in Celebration the Department of Reclamation will waive day use fees at New Melones Lake for all visitors. They are also hosting an invasive plant removal and native plant beautification event. Volunteers will receive a “fee-free day” coupon. Pre-registration requested details are here.

The 17th annual Sierra AIDS Walk will take place on Saturday, September 28, 2013 among the Giant Sequoias at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Organizers says the fund raising event is critical to ensure that residents of Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties affected by HIV or AIDS have access to lifesaving treatment and support services.
