Avoid A Thanksgiving Mess
Sonora, CA — A group of Tuolumne County agencies is urging residents to be smart when disposing of Thanksgiving waste.
T.U.D., Tuolumne County Solid Waste Division, Waste Management, Twain Harte Community Services and the Jamestown Sanitary District have launched an information campaign. They are asking residents to avoid pouring cooking oils and liquid fats down the drain, as it can result in blocked pipes.
The group has the following advice:
-Avoid pouring fats or vegetable cooking oils down the drain because liquid fats solidify in the pipes and create clogs.
-After grease has cooled, scrape the grease into a container with a tight fitting lid, and solidify it in the refrigerator before putting it in the trash.
-Never put hard to grind items in the garbage disposal, including poultry skins, egg shells, carrots, celery, pumpkin pulp, banana peels or pasta.
A cooking oil receptacle is set up at the Waste Management Transfer Station on Industrial Drive. The collection site is open to residential customers that are interested in disposing of used cooking oil. There is a $4 gate fee.
