City Administrator Says State Budget Projection May Be Optimistic

Sonora, CA — City of Sonora Administrator Greg Applegate says the state’s latest deficit projection may be “a little optimistic.”

California Legislative Analyst Mac Taylor is projecting that the state’s General Fund deficit will be $20.7 billion over the next year and a half.

“We’ve been hearing for the last month through the League of California Cities that it will be around $26 billion,” says Applegate. “It is a number that is staggering and a symptom of a far greater problem that has been plaguing the state for a number of years. There is a spending problem and a revenue problem.”

On December 7th the Sonora City Council will vote whether to approve a resolution in favor of an upcoming ballot initiative being pushed by the League of California Cities. It would end the state’s ability to borrow money from local municipalities to help balance the budget during difficult fiscal years.
