23 percent of California students were able to pass a physical fitness test this year, up from 20 percent in 1999.

The test was given to fifth, seventh and ninth graders in 90 percent of California school districts. It measures physical fitness in six areas including: cardiovascular endurance, percentage of body fat, abdominal strength and endurance and overall flexibility.
