Jamestown, CA — There are a couple of significant happenings related to California State Historic Parks, notably Railtown 1897 in Jamestown.
On Wednesday, Railtown announced, “Due to unexpected circumstances, previously scheduled train excursions are temporarily paused at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation temporarily paused train excursions at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park to proactively evaluate operations and maintain passenger and train crew safety.”
No further details were provided, but the park noted that an announcement will be made once train excursions resume.
In addition, the Governor’s Office announced that Californians can now take advantage of free California Historian Passports in recognition of both the upcoming Juneteenth holiday and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Normally priced at $50, it will allow free access for up to four people in the party to 30 selected state parks through the end of 2026. People must sign up by July 6. Click here for the link.
Among the 30 parks included are Railtown 1897, which regularly charges $5 for adults and $3 for children to enter the park’s museum. Among the other local parks, Calaveras Big Trees is not included, and Columbia State Park doesn’t charge entrance fees.
“California’s state historic parks preserve some of our nation’s most powerful and meaningful stories, and I’m proud to live in a state that celebrates diversity to connect more people with those stories through this limited-time free pass,” said California State Parks Director Armando Quintero. “I hope the free Historian Passport introduces more Californians to the state’s historic gems and sparks a curiosity, thirst for knowledge and sense of belonging that leads to many return visits.”
