An unusual series of late heavy storms toppled April snowfall records across the northern Sierra Nevada. State water watchers say the storms boosted the snow pack that provides much of the state´s water and electricity. The record spring snow follows the state´s third consecutive below-normal winter.
Northern Sierra remote snow measuring stations clocked 256% of the normal April precipitation. That makes it the 4th wettest April– behind 1948, 1963 and 1982– since the state started keeping records in 1922.
The Central Sierra Snow Lab at Soda Springs recorded 122% of its normal April snowfall, the 3rd snowiest April on record there. Alpine Meadows ski resort near Lake Tahoe calls it the snowiest April since the resort opened in 1970.
