SF Janitors On the Job…For Now

Sponsored by:

San Francisco janitors are on the job at commercial office buildings, at least for now. Union officials say San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown will mediate a meeting at city hall this morning between building owners and the janitors.

Janitors will march on city hall around noon today to hear the results of the meeting, and decide whether to strike.

More than 95 percent of the 800 janitors who voted on Saturday agreed to strike over a contract dispute about paid family health insurance. The walkout by 3,000 custodians could affect as many as 250 buildings in downtown San Francisco.

Union organizers say that would leave most of downtown San Francisco office buildings dirty, with untouched bathrooms and full trashcans.

It would be the city’s first janitor’s strike in more than a decade.
