Emissions Bill Clears State Senate

A global warming bill to limit carbon dioxide emissions from California cars has cleared the state Senate. The bill, which returns now to the state Assembly for agreement with Senate changes, gives car makers up to 2009 to begin complying. The Assembly approved the idea last January. If it agrees to the changes the bill goes to Governor Gray Davis.
Backers say the bill, the first of its kind nationally, will reduce California´s contribution to global warming. Car makers say it will raise costs and provide almost no climate benefits.
