Mono Way Widening Update

Sonora, CA — Contractors have until mid-February to submit bids for the Mono Way widening project.

The plan is to expand Mono Way to five lanes from Greenley Road to Fir Drive. Bids were requested this past fall, but the lowest, $3.39 million, was $635K over the engineer’s estimate. The Sonora City Council then decided to throw out the bids, and restart the process a second time. City of Sonora Administrator Tim Miller says bids can be submitted until 2pm on February 19th. In an effort to keep the price down, the contractors will have two different alternatives this time. The differences are related to storm drain construction and the option of having a decorative finish, or a smooth finish, on a retaining wall.

Miller notes that construction should start around March or April, and it will take an estimated six months to complete.

On a related note, Miller says it will be about two years before construction starts on a separate project to widen and improve the Greenley Road and Mono Way intersection. He says the City has funding in the budget for preliminary engineering for the intersection improvements. The City will later need to meet with the County and Transportation Council to discuss the cost, scope and schedule. Property to the east of the intersection also still needs to be acquired before the project can move forward.

Both projects referenced above will be funded by Traffic Impact Mitigation fees paid by developers.
