What are some of the most common illnesses you see come through the emergency department in the summertime?
During the summer, we see a lot of injuries. Examples of common summertime accidents include kids falling off their bikes and skateboards, hikers slipping and falling in rivers or lakes, and people injuring themselves as they work in their yards.
Tick bites are another common problem in the summer months.
We also see many heat-related conditions like heat exhaustion and extreme sunburn. Heat exhaustion not only affects those outside exerting themselves but it is also a concern for the elderly, especially those who live in a home without sufficient air conditioning. Elderly people are less able to adjust to temperature changes and more likely to have chronic health conditions that affect their tolerance of extreme temperatures.
