Driver Injured In Crash That Closed Highway

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — A Calaveras County man was flown to a hospital in Modesto after his concrete truck rolled over on Highway 49.

The crash occurred at 1:50pm on Thursday along Highway 49, just north of the Tuolumne and Calaveras county line. 49-year-old Michael Ross of San Andreas was driving the fully loaded 2002 Peterbilt concrete truck southbound on the highway and lost control going into a curve. The truck overturned onto the driver’s side, pinning Ross in the cab.

CHP Officer Toby Butzler says Ross was extricated from the truck by fire personnel, and he was flown to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto to treat “moderate to major injuries.”  The highway was closed from 1:50pm until 5:30pm. Officer Butzler adds, “Due to the weight of the cement in the truck, they had to actually remove the drum from the truck, before they could right it.”

None of the concrete spilled onto the highway. The CHP lists “unsafe speed” as a contributing factor to the crash.
