Ballot Measure Would Speed Up Death Penalty
Sacramento, CA — California voters may decide whether to pass a ballot measure that would speed up the process of executing those on death row.
California has not had an inmate executed since 2006. The measure, proposed by former NFL player Kermit Alexander, would impose time limits on state court death penalty reviews. It would also designate superior courts for initial petitions, and limit successive petitions. In addition, it would start allowing death row inmate transfers among California state prisons, and require that death row inmates pay victim restitution.
Alexander’s connection to the issue is that his mother, sister and two nephews were shot and killed by a gang member in 1984 in California, and the killer still remains on death row.
Proponents need to acquire 365,880 signatures in order to have the measure placed on the November of 2016 ballot.
