Delta Farmers Hit The Mark
Sacramento, CA — State water officials say a group of Northern California farmers not only met, but also exceeded their voluntary target set for conserving water during this historic drought.
On Friday, state water regulators reported that farmers in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta used 32 percent less water, which topples the 25 percent goal set by farmers. As previously reported in May of last year, California water officials accepted an offer by some Delta farmers to voluntarily cut their usage and avoid possible harsher mandatory restrictions. In a historic move, Delta farmers approached the state volunteering to make the cuts, as California was in the fourth year of the lingering drought. In exchange, water regulators agreed not to enforce potentially deeper cuts, which could have been imposed if the farmers had not met the set level.
