Update at 5:46 p.m.: Emergency crews remain on the scene of a plane crash outside the Columbia Airport in Tuolumne County. Tuolumne County Sheriff’s spokesperson, Ashley Boujikian, tells Clarke Broadcasting, “Next steps include investigation by outside agencies into the cause of the plane crash. Both the Federal Airline Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified. Please continue to avoid the area as it remains an active scene.”

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. in a pasture in the 10500 block of Horseshoe Bend Road, off South Airport Road in Columbia. When emergency crews arrived, two occupants were in their seats. The woman was able to climb out of the plane, while the man had to be freed by fire personnel. Both were flown to out-of-area hospitals for medical treatment. Crews on the scene report that fuel leaked from the plane. The type of aircraft or whether the plane was landing or taking off is unclear.
