Thousands Expected For Lumberjack Days
Thousands of people are expected in the community of West Point this Saturday, for one of the largest community events in Calaveras County.
Lorene Landreth was Thursday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.
Landreth has been one of the organizers for West Point’s Lumberjack Days for the past thirty-eight years.
Lumberjack Days is actually a one-day event that takes place annually on the first Saturday of October. A variety of activity will take place from early in the morning with a pancake breakfast at athe American Legion Hall through the evening hours with a dance at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
The entire day was created originally to celebrate the lumber history of Calaveras County. The entire downtown area will be closed to vehicle traffic.
This will allow for vendors, lumberjack shows, lumberjack competitions, a parade, car show, a soapbox derby, music, deejays, craft booths, street faire, food booths, horseshoe tournament, western style gunfighting performances and plenty of events for everyone in the family to enjoy.
Although the population of West Point is less than 700 residents, this event typically brings in well over 3,000 visitors.
Landreth believes that the small town charm of this community celebration continues to bring “city people” back into the town year after year.
Vehicle parking is $4 with the proceeds going directly to the Future Farmers of America (FFA) at Bret Harte High School.
