City Council O.K.’s Ballot Measure
Sonora, CA — The city and the county are in complete agreement regarding the proposed increase in the Transient Occupancy Tax.
At last week’s supervisorial meeting the vote was 4-1 (Teri Murrison abstained) to place the proposed increase in the T.O.T. from eight to 10 percent on the June 8 primary ballot.
Monday evening the City Council followed suit with a 4-1 vote. Dave Shepherd was the lone dissenter.
City Administrator Greg Applegate states the city would benefit to the tune of approximately $40,000 if the measure passes. CAO Craig Pedro adds that the county’s coffers would be enriched by $350,000. The increase for the marketing efforts of the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau would be approximately $13,000 a year.
The T.O.T. is a tax on hotel and motel occupants not residents of Tuolumne County. The exact distribution of the additional funds has yet to be determined.
