Tuolumne School Superintendent Talks About New School Year

The new school year has begun in Tuolumne County and already students will be enjoying their first three day Holiday weekend. The Superintendent of Tuolumne County Public Schools, Joseph Silva, was the KVML Friday Newsmaker.

Silva said, “The entire school calendar is planned out in advance so that our High Schools´ first Semester ends before Christmas break.”

There are four Public High Schools in Tuolumne County, all with trends of declining enrollment but according to Silva, Tuolumne County is not isolated as thirty eight of the fifty eight Counties in California are facing declining enrollment. Silva says that trend would and should change over time with more jobs and affordable housing.

Silva credits the relatively high amount of student transfers with “open choice”, which allows parents the opportunity to decide which school best suits their child. All transfer requests must first be approved by the School District.
