Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — In an incident just released by the Calaveras County Sheriff´s Department 31 year old Kevin Melby of Paloma was jailed Monday on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, battery on a peace officer, obstructing and resisting a peace officer and threatening with intent to terrorize and willfull cruelty to a child with possible injury or death.

The incident started when Melby threatened an unidentified 37 year old male and his daughter who were riding ATV´s on Cloward Rd. near Melby´s residence. Melby started swinging a four foot metal pole just missing the young girl.

Melby then retreated to his home where he refused to submit to Sheriff´s deputies who backed off when it was thought that he had an assault rifle at his disposal.

The Crisis Negotiations Team and S.W.A.T. unit arrived a short time later. Negotiations continued for over an hour but to no avail. Finally members of the S.W.A.T. unit entered the residence and took the uncooperative Melby into custody. No weapon was discovered. Melby spat at one of the S.W.A.T. members during the arrest.

He was booked into the County Jail with bail set at $185,000.
