Sonora, CA — Steve Green, who is 63, has been a Tuolumne County resident for 39 years.
He is a Veteran and Adjunct Commander of American Legion Post 68. He was also one of the builders of the youth non-profit High Country Sports Arena and spent 20 years as the vice president of the board of directors.
Green says, “I decided to run for the Board of Supervisors for a few reasons. My wife retired from working for the county a couple of years ago after 35 years of service. She’s given me an in-depth and informative perspective on the consequences of decisions made by past boards over the years.”
He continues, “It’s become apparent that our local government has lost sight of the basics of governance by focusing on the big flashy projects like the new justice center and expanding the number of fire stations, while letting the simple basic services that our tax dollars are supposed to provide take budget cuts, which is going to cost us a lot more money down the road.”
Elaborating on the fire station comment, he adds, “Don’t get me wrong though, expanding fire services, and the number of stations, is something that we definitely needed, and continue to need. The problem is that the board did it with the use of one-time money and then didn’t find an ongoing funding source, even though they had three years to do so, which has ended up with us losing one of those expansion fire stations.”
Green says his priorities include fully funding fire and ambulance services, basic road maintenance, ensuring road ditches are cleaned out, and brush is cut back on a regular basis. He also wants to make it easier for small businesses to operate in the county.
