Last month´s wildfires burned more acreage and damaged more buildings than any others in California history. That´s according to new statistics from the California

Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The figures show the Cedar Fire in San Diego County scorched about 273,000 acres.

About 989,000 acres have burned across the state this year.

That tops the previous record year — 1987 — when fires charred 780,000 acres.

In the Mother Lode CDF unit, fire crews fought 365 wildfires which burnt nearly 4,500 acres and more than cost $2.8 million to fight. On the Stanislaus National Forest, U.S. Forest Service crews battled 113 fires.

State-wide, more than 4,800 structures were destroyed in this year´s blazes compared to 1991 when the Oakland Fire burned almost 3,000 structures.

Meanwhile, federal officials said yesterday they have provided nearly $74 million dollars in aid following the California wildfires.
