SACRAMENTO (AP) __ A new poll finds that most Californians oppose granting driver´s licenses to illegal immigrants.

A survey released today by the Field Poll says that 62 percent of state residents oppose granting driver´s licenses to illegal immigrants, while 35 percent favor the idea. But the poll found that Californians are virtually split on issuing a different kind of license to illegal immigrants. The survey also found a large ethnic divide on the question. Three out of four white, non-Hispanics said they are opposed to issuing regular driver´s licenses to illegal immigrants, while Hispanics favor the idea by a two-to-one margin.

The survey was conducted among 506 adults living over a nine-day period through February 17th.
