Sierra Snow Pack Thick
The Sierra snow pack is abundant and well above average for this time of year. Division of Water Resources State Hydrologist Mory Roos says the snow pack in the Sierra Nevada mountain range is well above the average for January and 90-percent of the average for April 1st. Roos says that while it´s great to have so much moisture early in the season, there is some concern that if the storms stop, or if a warm rain melts the snow, the powder could dissipate early and create water storage problems. Roos adds that the recent deluge of rain and snow in the Golden State has been a boon for California reservoirs. Hydrologists say the way winter is shaping up, the snow pack may be one of the best in the past several years. Several feet of snow fell at higher elevations earlier this week. The National Weather Service recorded over an inch and a half rain in Sonora between Monday morning and Tuesday night.
