Dispensary Ordinance Still Troubles CalCo Supervisors

If it´s a medication, why can´t you get it at the local pharmacy?

That´s the question the sheriff and other opponents to a medical marijuana bill in Calaveras County are asking… as patients needing marijuana for medical reasons spoke to the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors this week.

Supervisor Merita Calloway made a motion to support a new ordinance, which would have put medical marijuana dispensaries under conditional use in professional office buildings.

The motion died for lack of a second, the same result as when the Calaveras County Planning Commission worked to finalize the needed ordinance recently.

Patients from the Calaveras Compassion Collective spoke to the Board Monday, explaining their current pain medications can damage the liver, and chemotherapy for cancer patients can cause loss of appetite and vomiting.

Supervisor Lucy Thein is quoted in the Calaveras Enterprise as saying she sympathizes with those who are in pain, but still could not vote for the ordinance.

Supervisor Victoria Erickson said she watched her brother die of AIDS, and saw the amount of pain he was in, but ultimately also voted against the measure.
