Cogdill: Property Tax Relief Shouldn´t Be Cut
State Assemblyman Dave Cogdill and a coalition of county officials and farmers plan to hold a press conference in Madera tomorrow. The Assemblyman from Modesto and others are announcing their opposition to the Governor´s proposed cuts to Williamson Act funding. Governor Davis has proposed eliminating the program to help fill what he claims is an almost $35 billion budget hole.
Williamson Act funding is used to reimburse counties for lost property taxes they would collect if certain farm and ranch land was assesed at full market value. That land is assesed only at open space or farming value. The idea is to give farmers and ranchers a tax break to encourage them to continue their way of life
