Improvements Planned For Hetch Hetchy
San Francisco´s Public Utilities Commission has approved a resolution that recommends putting a three-point-six billion dollar bond measure to upgrade Hetch Hetchy on the November ballot. The P-U-C wants to renovate and do seismic upgrades to the city´s 70-year-old water system in the Mother Lode. The system runs more than 160 miles from Yosemite National Park to the Bay Area. It serves about two-point-four million people.
The P-U-C says the system´s infrastructure is in serious disrepair and susceptible to failure in an earthquake. Scientists say a major earthquake could leave several San Francisco Bay area cities without their main source of water for up to two months.
