Board Wants Malpractice Records Public

Sponsored by:

The Medical Board of California has voted to push lawmakers toward making medical malpractice records available to the public. The board´s unanimous vote came Friday. It wants criminal misdemeanor convictions disclosed along with other records, such as whether a physician is a registered sex offender.

The board also voted to make investigations public after they´re first referred to the state attorney general instead of waiting for the filing of a formal accusation. The vote came four months after the San Francisco Chronicle published a report that the board says doctors are free of complaints, even after juries have forced them to pay millions of dollars for harming patients.
