Governor Gray Davis has announced that about one million Californians laid off as a result of the terrorist attacks will get an extra bonus in their unemployment checks. The benefits will be paid retroactively starting this week. To be eligible for the retroactive benefits, a claim must have been filed on or before December 30th, with weekly unemployment benefits paid beginning on or after September 11th. Steve Smith is director of the state´s Labor and Workforce Development Agency. He says some workers could receive up to an additional $2,600.00. Smith says about 326,000 checks totaling $283-million will go out today. The remaining checks are expected to arrive in October or November.
