GOP Geared For Tough Fight

Republicans holding their state convention admit Bill Simon faces a tough fight for governor. The faithful began meeting yesterday in Garden Grove. A consultant says the excitement of the gathering will help Simon´s campaign. He´s eight points behind incumbent Gray Davis in a recent poll. GOP delegates acknowledge that Davis is better funded than Simon and that Democrats outnumber Republican voters in California. But they say low approval ratings for Davis show promise that Simon can take the November fifth election. Simon is scheduled to address the delegates today.
