Governor To Start Budget Trimming
The Thanksgiving turkey and the Christmas tree aren´t the only things being trimmed in California this season. The state budget, with a $21 billion deficit, is about to get a trimming too.
Governor Davis has issued an executive order for state department heads to postpone or cancel contracts to buy new equipment, cut back on agreements with outside consultants and to halt all “nonessential” travel.
The order does not apply to highway projects or to public safety. Davis wants the Legislature and judicial branches to cut costs too.
On December sixth, Davis will send lawmakers his plan for trimming the current budget. Three days later, the Legislature will begin a special session to consider the cuts.
