Timber Industry Wants A Stronger Approach To Forest Plan

Local timber industry officials want a more aggressive approach to the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan Amendment. A decision by Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth last week, denied several appeals brought forward by both environmental and timber industry groups that were against the plan.
A major part of the plan calls for the thinning of timber to reduce the threat of devastating wildfires in the region. Environmentalists want less thinning of the forests while the timber industry wants more with bigger trees added into the equation, believing this will create more defensible fire zones.
After making his recommendations to the plan, Chief Bosworth instructed forest officials to examine ways to further reduce fire risks in Sierra forests.
