Governor Requests Extension

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — Governor Jerry Brown is formally asking a federal court panel for a two year extension on implementing additional measures to reduce the prison population.

The Brown Administration filed the papers that outlined changes the state would make to reduce the prison population by 7,000 additional inmates. A three-judge panel has mandated that California reduce its population due to inadequate medical services and other issues. The state has reduced its population by around 30,000 over recent years, mainly resulting from the implementation of the AB-109 program.

The Associated Press reports that the Governor is requesting a two year extension of the deadline, to February 28, 2016.
