CHP Discusses Some Rules Of The Road
Now that school is back in session, the CHP has noticed that some drivers continue to either not know the basic rules regarding school buses or are simply ignoring the laws.
CHP Officer and Spokesperson Rebecca Myers was Wednesday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.
Myers said, “The newer buses have yellow lights and red lights. When you see the yellow lights, it is a warning that the red lights will likely be coming on. It works similar to a regular traffic light. In the case of newer buses, there are also stop signs that swing out.”
Motorists must stop both ways (on both sides of the street) when any school bus has its red lights on.
Myers also reminds residents that they are invited to stop by the CHP office and have their child safety seat looked at. This is a courtesy and citations will not be issued if the seat is not properly installed. Simply call the CHP office ahead of time and schedule an appointment.
Motorists in California are not allowed to talk on a cell phone while driving unless they are using a hands-free device. Motorists are also not allowed to text while driving or type on the phone for any reason.
A new law took effect on September 1st. Motorists must allow at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist. If there is not enough room, the vehicle(s) must travel behind the bicyclist until it is legal to pass.
The CHP also reminds bike peddlers that it is illegal to ride a bike while intoxicated. This is called a BUI- Bicycling Under The Influence, and if caught that rider will be arrested and taken to jail. The arrest goes on a person’s driving record for three years.
