Update: Winter Storm Warning Issued For The Mother Lode

Sponsored by:

The Winter Storm Warning currently in effect for the Sierra Nevada, will continue until 10 AM Tuesday.

Moderate to heavy snow is expected today, with the snow levels ranging between 2,000 to 3,500 feet.

The National Weather service has issued a Winter Storm Advisory for the foothills of Mariposa County starting at 4 PM this afternoon. And then at 10 PM tonight, a Winter Storm Warning for the entire Mother Lode above 1,000 feet, will go into effect and continue until 10 AM Tuesday.

Two to twenty inches of snow accumulation is likely in the upper foothills by the end of the day today, with winds gusting up to forty-five mph. The gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Activity will be showery tonight with another round of heavy snow on Sunday afternoon and Monday. The snow levels will range between 1,000 to 3,000 feet through Tuesday morning.

By Tuesday morning, the total snow accumulation in the Mother Lode from 1,000 to 2,000 feet, will be less than half-a-foot. The total snow accumulations from 2,000 to 3,000 feet will range between six inches to fifty inches. Above the 3,000 foot elevation, additional snow accumulations will range from three to ten feet. The higher you go, the more the snow.

Gusty winds as high as fifty-five mph in the Sierra Nevada will further reduce visibilities during this event, with local whiteout conditions possible.

Major travel delays and difficult or impossible travel conditions are anticipated through early next week. Holiday travelers should prepare for winter driving conditions by packing chains, warm winter clothes, and extra food and water. Foothill locations that do not normally receive snow should prepare for winter conditions.

A Winter Storm Warning means there will be snow covered roads and limited visibilities. Travel is not recommended while the Warning is in effect. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
