Plan For A Good Time With No Jail Time
Sacramento, CA — Have a plan in place for a sober ride home before the celebration starts tonight. So warns CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.
This New Year’s holiday Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) begins today at 6 p.m. and runs through Sunday, Jan. 4 until midnight. During this time, in addition to exhibiting wise behavior behind the wheel, Farrow encourages the public to call 911 if they suspect a driver of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence. On a call-in, Farrow says, please be ready with all the necessary details, such as the location, vehicle’s make, model, and license plate number, so that dispatchers are able to help officers respond quickly and accurately.
“With all the available transportation methods to choose from on New Year’s Eve, there is no excuse to drive under the influence behind the wheel of a vehicle. Designate a sober driver, take a taxi, or use public transportation to make it a safe night for everyone on the road,” Farrow advises.
Last year, CHP reports show that 14 people died in collisions statewide during the New Year’s holiday Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP). In addition, CHP officers arrested more than 450 people for driving under the influence.
