Summerville Football Coach Shifts Gears
Tuolumne, CA — Longtime Summerville Head Football Coach Ben Watson has decided to call it quits. He has been the head football coach for nine years. He is also the Varsity Basketball Coach, a position he will retain, while taking on the new role of Varsity Golf Coach.
Summerville Superintendent Robert Griffith says Watson told his players about the move a couple of days ago. Griffith says that while Watson’s shoes will be hard to fill, one of the main criteria will be, “Someone that fits in with our particular school district, with our community and students. A person who has experience obviously and that we think will be effective working in our school and district and make a positive impact with our students.”
As reported previously, in 2010 the school board discussed the issue of limiting the number of seasons and sports that one person could coach. Such a decision would have impacted Coach Watson, who at the time coached varsity football, basketball and softball. However, the board took no action on the subject. That issue played no role in this latest decision according to Griffith, who says, “Coach Watson made this decision all on his own.”
Coach Watson steps down after a winning season with a record of 6-4. He led the bears to the Sac-Joaquin Division V playoff. Unfortunately, the team lost in the first round to Colfax 42-35.
